K EU–India 2026: A Global Partnership with Important Stakes for Romania

At a time when the world’s major economies are reshaping their trade alliances and securing their supply chains, the relationship between the European Union and India is gaining unprecedented strategic importance. The EU–India Leaders’ Conference 2026, to be held on 9 June at the European Parliament in Brussels, is therefore more than a dialogue forum: it is emerging as a platform for economic coordination between two major poles of the global economy.

Under the theme Strengthening Partnerships for Trade and Sustainable Growth in the EU–India Corridor,” the event, coordinated by the Europe India Centre for Business and Industry (EICBI), reflects a broader trend: Europe’s shift toward stable partnerships in Asia in a global context marked by trade tensions, technological competition, and the need to diversify economic dependencies.

India – one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world – is becoming a key partner for the European Union, both as an export market and a strategic hub for manufacturing, technology, and innovation. At the same time, the EU seeks to strengthen its strategic autonomy by expanding economic relations with actors beyond its traditional spheres of influence.

Within this broader context, the conference brings together political leaders, diplomats, investors, and business representatives, providing a framework in which dialogue moves beyond statements and focuses on concrete mechanisms of cooperation.

Romania’s Representation and Access to the Event

Participation in the conference is strictly by invitation, following a selection process targeting business leaders and decision-makers involved in the development of international economic relations.

For Romania, involvement in such initiatives is becoming increasingly relevant. In an economic landscape where competitiveness depends broadly on access to external markets and integration into global value chains, connecting to the EU- India economic corridor represents a strategic opportunity for Romanian companies.

As media partner of EICBI, Kol.Press will provide real-time coverage of the event, ensuring that audiences in Romania gain access to the most important conclusions, analyses, and development directions that will emerge from the discussions.

Summit Agenda

The 2026 edition proposes an agenda aligned with the world’s major economic priorities:

  • The EU–India Free Trade Agreement – a strategic issue that could redefine trade and investment flows between the two regions
  • Sustainability and Innovation – cooperation in the green transition, ESG standards, and clean technologies
  • Digital Transformation and Economic Security – digitalisation, resilience, and protection of critical infrastructure
  • Recognition of Leadership – the EuropeIndia40 ceremony, dedicated to the new generation of leaders shaping the bilateral relationship

What It Means for Romania in Practice

Beyond the diplomatic dimension, the real stake for Romania is pragmatic: positioning within a new economic corridor linking Europe to one of the world’s most dynamic markets. As European companies seek alternatives to traditional dependencies in Asia, India is emerging as a strategic option- and Romania could take on a more active role than it has so far.

In the IT and digital services sector, there is clear potential for complementarity. Romania has a competitive technology ecosystem at European level, while India excels in scalability and delivery capacity. Bilateral partnerships could enable to joint projects in software development, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, with access to wider markets.

In the energy sector, cooperation could be further accelerated in the area of the green transition. Romania has resources and ongoing renewable energy projects, while India’s interest in clean technologies and energy infrastructure investment creates strong foundations for collaboration in wind, solar, and green hydrogen.

In manufacturing and industry, the reconfiguration of global supply chains is creating opportunities for investment and the relocation of production capacities. Romania can become an entry point to the European market for Indian companies, benefiting from its geographic position and membership in the EU’s single market.

However, the ability to capitalise on these opportunities depends on several key factors: representation in international forums of this kind, coherence in economic policies, and the business environment’s capacity to build long-term partnerships. Without an active and strategic presence, there is a risk that these opportunities will be captured by other better-positioned European economies.

Benefits of Participation

Participation offers access to a high-level ecosystem of decision-making and influence that is difficult to replicate elsewhere  :

  • high-level networking in an exclusive setting
  • access to strategic information and investment opportunities
  • direct dialogue with decision-makers and global leaders
  • insight into the economic policy directions of the EU and India
